At HUXWRX, we take our mission of Safety extremely serious.  Given this, we felt it was important to review the top 10 shooting safety rules.  It doesn’t matter if you are a master or a novice, these rules must be refreshed and committed to memory and action.  As follows:

  1. Always Treat Every Firearm as If It Is Loaded: Regardless of whether you know the gun is unloaded, always handle it with the utmost care and caution, keeping it pointed in a safe direction.

  2. Keep the Muzzle Pointed in a Safe Direction: Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction away from yourself and others, ensuring that no one is in the line of fire.

  3. Keep Your Finger Off the Trigger Until Ready to Shoot: Only place your finger on the trigger when you are ready to shoot. Keep your finger outside the trigger guard until you are prepared to fire.

  4. Know Your Target and What Lies Beyond It: Be aware of your target and what is located beyond it. Make sure you have a clear and safe shooting area with a suitable backstop to catch bullets.

  5. Use Correct Ammunition for Your Firearm: Only use ammunition that is appropriate for your specific firearm. Using the wrong ammunition can lead to malfunctions and safety hazards.

  6. Wear Eye and Ear Protection: Always wear suitable eye and ear protection when shooting to safeguard your vision and hearing from potential harm caused by gunshots and debris.

  7. Keep Your Firearm Unloaded When Not in Use: When the firearm is not in use, keep it unloaded and ensure the action is open. Store guns in a secure location, such as a gun safe, to prevent unauthorized access.

  8. Be Familiar with Your Firearm: Before using a firearm, familiarize yourself with its operation, safety features, and how to safely handle and shoot it. Practice proper gun handling techniques regularly.

  9. Never Point Your Firearm at Anything You Are Not Willing to Destroy: Exercise caution and mindfulness when handling firearms. Avoid pointing the gun at people, animals, or objects unless you intend to shoot them.

  10. Maintain Control of Your Firearm: Always maintain complete control of your firearm, ensuring you have a firm grip and remain aware of its position and orientation at all times. Avoid careless handling or passing the gun to others without following proper safety protocols.

It is everyone’s job to ensure we pass these rules and apply common sense when utilizing firearms.  It is in their safe employment that we protect our rights and the safety of those around us.
